Why is Grovetown, GA Exploding & What Has Changed?
Did you know Grovetown, Georgia was once considered a desirable holiday home location for many prominent leaders from Augusta and even around the country? Thanks to the railway system between Atlanta and Augusta in the late 1800s, this spot became a popular getaway for people looking to flee the hustle and bustle of nearby Augusta as well as the cold winters further north.
Humble Beginnings
Since its incorporation as a city in the 1880s, Grovetown has truly exploded in growth. It's showing no signs of stopping, either. Grovetown may have started as a sleepy village outside of then Camp Gordon, but it's come so far from its inception until now. This area now has more new construction than almost 96% of the United States! New construction (defined as homes built since 1999) makes up approximately 70% of the real estate in Grovetown.
Grovetown in the Last Two Decades
The City of Grovetown is one of the fastest growing cities in the state of Georgia for a reason. If you could revisit the Grovetown from twenty years ago, it would be unrecognizable to today. Grovetown has grown 184.7% since 2000. For some context, that's a growth rate that's about 94% faster than similarly sized cities nationwide.
New neighborhoods, new traffic lights, new major corridors, and plenty of new shops, restaurants, and event spaces have popped up leading to ever-increasing quality of living for its residents. The City of Grovetown's Public Information Officer, Jordan Johnson, said, "Blossoming from a quaint hub for rail transportation, growing into a military community serving nearby Fort Eisenhower, and ultimately becoming a leading city for growth in the Southeast, we will always remember our roots and Grovetown’s history as ‘a friendly little City.’"

Grovetown Five Years Ago
Since the pandemic, Grovetown's population has grown about 15%. As our nation faced the challenges of remote work and virtual learning, many families found Grovetown to be the perfect spot to get some space in the comfort of their own new home.
New home construction has been a vital contributor to the fast growth of this area. The military has always made up a huge percentage of the families that call Grovetown home. Within the last five years, Augusta has also added several cyber security centers and won key governmental contracts and grants for new cyber security infrastructure both on and off base. This cyber boom has landed many new professionals in Grovetown as well, loving the area for its low cost of living and larger homesites.
Grovetown Today: Building for Tomorrow
It's impossible to discuss the future of Grovetown without revisiting the growing cyber hub in its neighboring Augusta. Hillary on Techbullion.com writes, "Looking ahead, Augusta plans to expand its cybersecurity influence. Local leaders envision Augusta as a 'Silicon Valley' for cybersecurity. Here, government, education, and private companies will work together to advance the industry. Plans to grow the Cyber Center of Excellence, increase funding for Augusta University’s cybersecurity programs, and attract more tech companies show Augusta’s commitment to this vision."
To learn more about what specifically is in store for Grovetown in the decades to come, we talked with Jordan Johnson, City of Grovetown Public Information Officer. Read his full quote below about how Grovetown will continue to evolve and delight its residents:
“Simply put, Grovetown is a wonderful place to live, work, and play. Projected to reach a population of over 20,000 residents in the next five years, we are constantly looking at ways to further improve an already stellar quality of life for our citizens. Perfect examples of this are demonstrated through our upcoming road projects, to include the installation of a roundabout, which will greatly ease traffic concerns in and around our community.
With businesses popping up all around our area, including the new hospital and several new restaurants, we are preparing for further growth in a way that is sustainable for future generations. With projects like the upcoming Depot event space that will reintroduce a lost landmark to our City, in addition to the many community events that we hold throughout the year, the City of Grovetown will always maintain its smalltown spirit as we rise toward our future together.”
